We think we’re something solid, but all we really are is experience.
We think we know many things, but all we really know is experience.
What we call knowledge is what’s in our thinking. Most of it came from someone else’s thinking. Much of it is misleading or plain wrong, and leads to our suffering and the suffering of others. We think knowledge which is not thinking is valueless, ignorable.
Thinking – along with imagination, dreaming and all mental phenomena – is an element of our experience, it’s the experience of thinking – whatever we happen to be thinking about. Because we trust our thinking, we think we have a body – but what is our actual experience of a body? It’s just physical sensations, and thoughts of them being a body. We have sensations, sights, sounds, smells and tastes, whether we think about them or not, and we have thinking. we could call those six senses, six forms of experience.
solid?
Whatever we think of our self and the world, all we know directly is experience. That is all we know of our existence, simply pure experience. Can we see ourselves as just being this awareness? The word “solid” has no meaning here, “solid” is just a thought about experience.
We are a world of experience. We all are. These worlds interpenetrate, they have concordance and difference, not fixable, not definable. They are not separate, any more than different gusts of wind. We are boundaryless mandalas of experience, in constant change, and the one constant non-thing we are, is Awareness.
qualities of Awareness
Awareness has qualities, expressed or noticed to different degrees. These intrinsic qualities of all awareness do not include: solid, separate, experienced, owned, temporary, better, worse, limited, unimportant, and many other things we may think about ourselves.
We need to know who we are – and others are. We can begin to look at everything from the view of experience, rather than from concepts, beliefs, and assumptions. See that nothing in our waking or sleeping is anything but experience and thoughts that claim to be about experience – which are themselves nothing but boundaryless experience.
Welcome to Reality.
