I Met a Thought

Our thoughts appear, we cannot say from where,

controlled by thoughts our actions are not free,

the crux is – how we meet the thought that’s there.

In meditation’s cold unblinking stare

I realise I’m thinking, and I see:

a thought appears, I cannot say from where.

It seems like me who thought that, I declare,

for as I think, there is no other me –

the crux is, can I meet the thought that’s there?

Can I question it, do I dare

to hear it, then to see if I agree?

– Thoughts just appear, I cannot say from where.

This questioning’s a thought – they make a pair:

the questioner is just another ‘me’.

The crux is, I can meet the thought that’s there.

Controlled by thoughts? You do not need to be,

nor victim of a fixed idea of ‘me’,

thoughts just appear, you cannot say from where,

the crux is – how you meet the thought that’s there.
